Healthy Nutrition for Babies and Young Children

At Nourishing Hope Silicon Valley, our work begins with one clear mission: to ensure that babies and young children have access to the nutritious food they need to grow and thrive.

Public nutrition programs such as WIC provide essential support to millions of families, but they cannot always cover every family or meet every baby’s individual needs. Nourishing Hope helps close these gaps by focusing on three groups of families:

Families Facing the WIC Income Gap

Some working families earn slightly more than the WIC income limit—generally 185% of the Federal Poverty Level—but still struggle with the Bay Area’s high costs of housing, childcare, healthcare, and other basic necessities. Although these families may not qualify for WIC benefits, purchasing enough formula and nutritious baby food can still create a significant financial burden.

Families Facing the WIC Access Gap

Some families qualify for WIC but never successfully receive the benefits. Nationally, approximately 17.7% of eligible infants do not participate in WIC. Families may be unaware of the program, mistakenly believe they are ineligible, experience language or administrative barriers, or have difficulty completing the application process.

Families Facing Formula-Specific Gaps

Some babies require a particular formula because of allergies, food sensitivities, digestive concerns, or medical conditions. WIC benefits are limited to approved brands, types, and package sizes, while specialized or medically necessary formulas may require physician documentation and coordination among WIC, healthcare providers, and insurance companies. Even families already receiving assistance can therefore experience urgent gaps when the formula covered does not fully match their baby’s needs.

To address these challenges, Nourishing Hope supplies baby formula, purées, cereals, fruits, vegetables, and other essential nutrition to food pantries, shelters, nonprofit partners, and families with young children. Through our relationships with many community organizations across San Francisco, Sunnyvale, San Jose, and the greater Bay Area, we work to identify specific needs and provide timely, practical support.

Funds raised through our youth-led sports and enrichment programs, together with community donations and sponsorships, make this work possible. We are not seeking to replace WIC or other public assistance programs. Instead, we help close the gaps that these programs cannot always fill.

Our work is about more than providing food. It is about giving babies a healthier beginning, helping parents feel supported during difficult times, and showing families that their community cares.

Nourishing Hope helps close the gaps that public nutrition programs cannot always fill—nourishing the next generation, one baby at a time.
